In response to a Right to Information (RTI) request, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) confirmed through a Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) that it has no procedure to remove Aadhaar numbers from its database.
The RTI sought information on the process of removing Aadhaar numbers, details of authentication requests, and entities requesting such data. Although the CPIO initially claimed that there was no data sharing, the applicant contested this citing instances where a gas agency and a bank had used his Aadhaar information. The applicant argued for the option to delete his Aadhaar data once used by third parties.
This issue came to light during a Central Information Commission (CIC) investigation following the applicant’s complaint about UIDAI’s response. The CIC indicated it would not directly address the issue but would consider raising it in relevant forums if the appellant desired. After filing the RTI in September and not receiving a response, the applicant appealed in November and subsequently approached the CIC when the appellate authority did not investigate.
