India’s Proposal for a UN Committee for Internet-Related Policy

India proposed the establishment of a United Nations Committee for Internet-Related Policies (CIRP) at the UN General Assembly’s 66th session. Emphasizing democracy, openness, and inclusivity, India argued for a multilateral and participatory approach to global internet governance.

The CIRP aims to develop international policies, coordinate standards, facilitate agreements, address developmental issues, and protect human rights online. It would include 50 Member States with equitable representation and advisory groups from civil society, private sector, inter-governmental bodies, and technical experts. The proposal seeks to fill gaps in current governance structures, ensuring internet governance evolves transparently and effectively in response to global challenges.
