Madras HC hears on the feasibility of tracing on end-to-end messaging platforms

In 2019, two petitions were filed in the Madras High Court seeking the mandatory linking of social media accounts with government-authorized identification proof. The High Court expanded the scope of the petitions to include issues of fake news and the feasibility of traceability on end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging platforms. The High Court sought opinions from expert Prof. V. Kamakoti who highlighted methods for achieving traceability without compromising encryption, a proposal contested by WhatsApp and other commentators. This matter, along with similar petitions, is now pending before the Supreme Court.
