The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has reiterated its proposal to mandate GPS in all mobile handsets to improve emergency response accuracy, despite the Department of Telecom’s (DoT) rejection due to the prevalence of low-cost handsets without GPS.
TRAI emphasized that most smartphones already include GPS and that the transition to GPS-enabled devices could be cost-effective with mass production. The Ministry of Home Affairs supports this proposal, stating it would enhance location accuracy during emergencies. TRAI’s recommendations include implementing a single emergency number (112) and an integrated emergency response system.
